This appointment includes a vaginal ultrasound to confirm your due date and well being of your pregnancy.
Prenatal visit to review medical history, perform physical exam and pap smear and obtain blood test (including blood type and tests for exposures).
Optional additional testing:
- 1st Trimester Screen including a formal ultrasound and blood work. This tests looks to see if you have an increased risk of having a fetus affected with Trisomy 13, 18 or 21. It is not usually covered by insurance in women under 35. Please check with your insurance prior to this visit if you are interested in this test.
- CF Screening blood test to determine if you are a carrier of the cystic fibrosis gene (a severe inheritable lung condition). Learn more...
- Cell-free DNA is a blood test that looks at fetal cells found within your blood and analyzes them for the presence of Trisomy 13, 18, and 21. It was designed for women over the age of 35, who have a family history of genetic disorders, who have an abnormal finding on fetal ultrasound or who have had an abnormal 1st trimester screen or quad screen.
- Chorionic Villous Sampling is usually reserved for patients who are 35 or older or who have a family history of a genetic disorder. It is an invasive test where cells are taken directly from the placenta to determine fetal chromosomes and is performed by a high risk obstetrician.
Prenatal visit where two optional blood tests can be done, an amniocentesis can be discussed if necessary. Quad screen—a blood test that looks for the risk of having a fetus affected with a chromosomal disorder (such as Down’s syndrome) or Spina bifida/Neural Tube Defect. This is an optional test done only if the 1st trimester screen is not done and is typically covered by insurance. AFP – Included in the Quad screen but can be done alone or as an addition to the first trimester screen. Gives information regarding risk of neural tube defects in the fetus. Can also provide information regarding risk of growth restriction. Amniocentesis – a procedure where a needle is used to remove fluid from around the fetus to determine all chromosomes. It is usually performed by a high risk OB doctor and is not typically covered by insurance unless earlier testing is abnormal.
Prenatal visit that includes a full anatomy ultrasound performed by our ultrasonagrapher in the office. This ultrasound may reveal gender if you would like to know and if your baby cooperates!
Quick prenatal visit where glucose testing instructions and materials are given.
Prenatal visit where blood is drawn to test for gestational diabetes and anemia. Rhogam injection will be given to those patient with RH negative blood types.
Prenatal visit that includes administration of the TdaP vaccine—a vaccine recommended for all pregnant women to protect their newborn from Pertussis (whooping cough).
Prenatal visit that includes GBS vaginal culture. A cotton swab is placed in the vagina and the anus to screen for presence of Group B Strep. If present, antibiotics are given during labor to protect the infant.
Weekly prenatal visits that include a vaginal exam to check for dilation and thinning of the cervix.
